METHODS AND MATERIALS
OF THE MONASTIC SCRIBES

AIM
This workshop explores the methods and techniques used by scribes of pre 15th century Europe. This included treating and preparing vellum (calf skin) as a suface to work on, to source, cut and temper goose quills to preform calligraphy, preparing ox gall and wallnut inks to write with, creating pigments and their binding matter to paint with and finally making raised gesso for the gilding.
Students each produce a small illumination (using the materials and tools they have made) which they gild and paint.
